Trump's Tariff Tantrum BACKFIRES as Carney Outplays Him at His Own Game

Trump's escalating tariff campaign against Canada and Mexico throughout 2025, which reached 35% on Canadian goods, was designed to pressure both countries into making individual concessions and potentially break up their unified negotiating position. Instead of capitulating to Trump's divide-and-conquer tactics, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney skillfully countered by strengthening ties with Mexico, making strategic diplomatic visits to coordinate a joint response that turned Trump's pressure into an opportunity for deeper Canada-Mexico cooperation. Carney's masterstroke was abandoning any consideration of a bilateral U.S.-Canada deal that would exclude Mexico, effectively using Trump's own aggressive trade tactics to forge a stronger North American alliance that now presents a unified front against U.S. demands.
