The Sun Is About to Do Something It Hasn't Done in 12,000 Years

The Sun operates on a roughly 11-year cycle. It swings between periods of low activity, called solar minimum, and periods of high activity, called solar maximum. During solar maximum, sunspots multiply across the surface of the Sun, and the chances of massive solar flares and coronal mass ejections go way up.
 
 We are currently in Solar Cycle 25, which officially began in December of 2019. And here's where this story gets interesting.
