Bundeswehr jeeps burning during New Year's Eve in Leipzig

LEIPZIG. After the fire of several Bundeswehr vehicles in Leipzig on New Year's Eve, the State Criminal Police Office has started investigations. Arson was assumed, said a police spokeswoman, Bild reports.

The fire brigade was called to a car dealership around 10 p.m. on Thursday. There the flames destroyed a total of seven armed forces jeeps. Other cars were damaged by the effects of heat. The damage amounts to tens of thousands of euros.

Leipzig is considered a left-wing extremist stronghold
Meanwhile, a letter of allegiance appeared on the left-wing extremist scene portal Indymedis. In it, the perpetrators justified the arson attack with, among other things, the rejection of the state and its institutions. It says: "The repressive organizations such as cops, the armed forces, justice or job centers deserve our attacks in particular."

Last year there were serious riots in the Leipzig district of Connewitz at the turn of the year when left-wing extremists attacked the police. According to MDR, the security forces were present with around 700 officers in the city this year. Although a crowd of several hundred people gathered in Connewitz and set off fireworks, the situation remained largely calm. Leipzig is considered the center of the left-wing extremist scene in Saxony.
