France: African arsonist kills priest

Vendèe - The police arrested an African on Monday morning in the municipality of Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre in western France who is said to have murdered a clergyman. The man had given himself up and the act confessed, reported the news portal franceinfo. The body was found on the site of the Montfort missionary brothers in nearby Mortagne-sur-Sèvre.

The suspect is a 40-year-old from Rwanda. A political motive is currently excluded. He had already been investigated because of the fire in Nantes cathedral last summer. That is why he is said to have been under judicial supervision. Since the end of May he has lived in the Missionary Brotherhood.

Islamists kill believers in churches
An expulsion order had been issued against the African. However, since judicial supervision was not lifted, deportation was not possible.

Last summer, several people were killed in Islamist attacks in churches in France. In the northern French city of Saint Etienne du Rouvray, two gunmen murdered a clergyman . In Nice, southern France, a Tunisian killed three people in a church in October 2020.
