Germany: The Federal Criminal Police Office takes action against "hate postings" on the net

The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) took action against 90 authors of "hate postings" on the Internet. On the occasion of the seventh day of action against the dissemination of criminal content, they searched homes and questioned suspects, the BKA announced.

A man was arrested. He is said to have published specially drafted death sentences and called for their execution. Among the other accused are men and women whose posts are often directed against politicians.

Hermann: "Hate postings" may be a preliminary stage of the escalation
The state of Bavaria accounted for 23 of the 90 measures. The Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Hermann (CSU) praised the "consistent approach of the police and public prosecutor". The meticulous evaluation of confiscated evidence would often result in new investigative approaches.

"Hate postings" could be a preliminary stage of escalation. "We are therefore intensifying the fight against hatred on the Internet and are planning further cross-border campaigns, also to deter potential agitators," announced Hermann.

According to the BKA, the police recorded 2,607 criminally relevant "hate postings" in the past year. Compared to 2019, that is an increase of 71 percent.
