World's first floating pool 'to close after just 8 months' as it's too expensive to heat
The world's first floating swimming pool, located in London's South Bank, could be forced to close as residents forking out an eye-watering heating bill have had enough.
The showpiece pool went viral on social media when it was first unveiled, and it is supposed to be enclosed overnight to make it usable in winter.
However, the overnight cover is reportedly now broken, with daily heating costs of £450.
Flats in Embassy Gardens cost up to £4.5 million, but still residents don't fancy forking out on the £164,250 annual heating costs for a pool they can't always use.
One couple living there told The Sun: “It is too cold to be used at the moment so it seems mad that we’re still having to pay to heat it.
“If it’s £450 a day and, at most, five people are using it, that’s £90 per swim. That hardly seems like value for money.”
Another resident said: “We’re livid. The outside temperature has obviously dropped, but the Sky Pool is still open to residents and currently uncovered. We’re basically heating the sky.”
Residents foot the bill for the pool through the development's £9,000 per year service cost (for a two bed flat) and are planning on asking for it to be shut over winter at the next residents' association meeting.
It holds 400 tons of water and was shipped 5000 miles from Colorado, US, earlier this year - during the summer when it could actually be used.
After it was unveiled people on the street below could spot brave residents taking the dauntingly high plunge, but that sight has become increasingly rare as of late.
