Clown world: Chile approves changing the word “woman” to “menstruating person”

The Chilean Chamber of Deputies approved the project that proposed to replace the word “ woman ” with the term “ menstruating person ”. Now the initiative is heading to the Senate of the country but many women have shown their discontent.

Above: "APPROVED | The Chamber approves the project that promotes, secures and garantee the rights of menstruating persons. Sent to the Chilean Senate."

The Chamber of Deputies itself released a statement stipulating that this new term includes any human being who is menstruating. The project has been in the making since September 2021 and was presented by the Commission for Women and Gender Equity.

From that moment on, the initiative was presented with the term “menstruating person” replacing the word “woman”, which caused controversy and is now taken up again with its approval.

What is this project looking for?
Its creation was thanks to the coalition of President Boric, and according to what the authorities reported, its purpose is to guarantee the rights of menstruating people, it also indicates that the state "recognizes that people with the capacity to menstruate are holders of the right to a free and dignified menstrual management. For this reason, public policies that generate its proper exercise must be supported, favored and promoted.”

As stipulated, it seeks to carry out a reform of the health code where the right to access products for menstrual management will be facilitated, in addition to guaranteeing stricter quality controls for these.

With this approval, not only has the discontent of Chilean women been noted, but also of the women in the chamber themselves.

The republican deputy Chiara Barchiesi showed her total rejection of the reform. "What kind of project for women omits the incorporation of the term woman?" She questioned, also pointing out that it was an "ideological project" that denied scientific evidence and human nature.

Barchiesi, found it paradoxical that a project carried out to guarantee a dignified menstruation wanted to eliminate the word "woman".

“It seems that the purpose of the project is noble, it is very striking that the recipients of this project, that is, women, have been completely erased from the visibility of this bill. nowhere are we mentioned even when we are the only ones who go through this biological process, ”she said.

Opinions are also polarized among the deputies themselves, an example of this is that of Emilia Scheneider, who celebrated the approval of this project, seeing it as "a great advance for women and other masculinities."

Above: "We finally approved the project that guarantees access to hygiene and sexual health products for menstruating persons 💜 A breakthrough for women and trans masculinities. It hurts whoever it hurts, the recognition of trans people continues to advance ✊🏻 It goes to the Senate!"

Changing the term from "woman" to "menstruating person" comes from the intention of making both trans men as well as non-binary people, who are biologically born female but decide to transition or leave it aside, mentioned in this biological process.

However, through social networks, many Chilean women have shown that they identify with Barchiesi and his arguments, specifically pointing out that “It is not indifferent that instead of referring to women as such, the term 'menstruating person' is reduced to us, as if being a woman is reduced to the biological process of menstruating”.

In the same way, some Internet users have pointed out the fact that menstruation only constitutes the period in life, so when menopause arrives they would cease to be "menstruating persons", in addition to highlighting the fact that there are women who, despite being born with this biological sex never menstruate due to any condition or disease, so they also remain invisible when the term is changed.

At the moment it is not known if the dissatisfied sector will carry out any specific action to demonstrate.
