Taiwan says China threat is 'current and real'

The ambassador of the island state of Taiwan, Jhy-Wey Shieh, assesses the danger of a Chinese attack on his homeland as "current and real".

Berlin - It has increased further since February 24 due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, he told the broadcasters RTL and ntv. The diplomat warned of the effects of an occupation of Taiwan and the consequences for European export nations: "Every third euro that the Europeans earn comes from the business through these waters." Asked if the Chinese President felt encouraged by Russia's war, Shieh said: "We think a little differently: we think that Putin has cut a slice of Xi Jinping and China by realizing that China's military expansionism in the South China Sea went unpunished."

This rather encouraged Putin, according to Shieh. "Putin thought: Then I can afford it, too, and then the invasion war against Ukraine began." With a view to the relations between Germany and China, the Taiwanese said that in a globalized world the Federal Republic could not completely do without trade with China.

However, Shieh questioned whether this was really a partnership of equals: "Can you call that a partner? I don't think so, because the Chinese blackmail their business partners," said the ambassador. "You make yourself dependent and then you are left behind."
