China tests missile interception system


The Department of Defense said the technology was necessary for national defense and security. The test was successful.

Shanghai - China says it has tested a ground-based missile interceptor system. "The test has met the expected goals," said the Ministry of Defense on Sunday. "This test was defensive and not directed against any country." The technology has been tested for national defense and security. Further details were not known.

Along with Russia, China has repeatedly spoken out against the deployment of the US missile defense system THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) in South Korea. The Beijing government argues that the facility's powerful radar could penetrate its sovereign territory. The People's Republic regards Taiwan as a breakaway province, and American support for the democratically ruled island has been a constant source of tension between China and the United States. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, concerns arose in the West that China might do something similar to Taiwan.

President Xi Jinping's government has stepped up research on all types of missiles, including advanced ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads, as part of a modernization program.
