Germany is growing because of an immigration surplus


The population in Germany grew last year due to the influx of tens of thousands of migrants. Compared to 2020, the number of people living here increased by around 82,000 to 83.2 million, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Monday.

Last year, 317,000 more migrants settled in Germany than left the country. Around 10.9 million foreigners currently live in Germany.

The proportion of foreigners in Germany is increasing
With the increased immigration, the proportion of foreigners in Germany also increased. While around 12.7 percent of the local population came from another country in 2020, the figure for the previous year is now 13.1 percent. The number of German citizens, on the other hand, fell by 226,000.

The average age of the German population was 44.7 years last year. The group of people over 80 grew by three percent to 6.1 million. The number of deaths continued to exceed the number of births.
