Germany: Despite the crisis, research projects on Covid, right-wing extremism and racism receive funding

Despite the austerity measures in the federal budget, important research projects on Corona and political extremism are to be funded in the coming year.

Berlin - "As a result, we have managed to ensure the funding of projects in the social sciences and humanities on a reduced scale from 2023," said Federal Minister of Education Bettina Stark-Watzinger (FDP) to the newspapers of the Funke media group (Tuesday editions). This applies above all to research on the social effects of the corona pandemic and on right-wing extremism and racism. "Despite the difficult budgetary situation, we were able to ensure that no ongoing research projects had to be canceled and that as many projects as possible could be funded."

However, the funded projects must expect restrictions: In the Corona area, only 17 out of 36 projects will be funded from 2023, each with only 90 percent of the amount applied for. 10 million euros are available here, originally 20 million had been planned. In the field of right-wing extremism, on the other hand, almost all projects are funded, but only with 95 percent of the funding amount.

Around 27 million will be available for this area from 2023.
