Germany: many swimming pools have to close due to the energy crisis

Numerous swimming pools in Germany have to close just before the summer holidays because of the energy crisis.

Berlin - The municipal operators could no longer pay the energy costs. In Halle (Saale), the municipal utilities closed a gas-heated indoor pool at the end of June and reduced the opening times in another indoor pool. In Baden-Wuerttemberg alone, according to estimates by the local authorities, 45 bathrooms are threatened with closure due to cost increases in the wake of the gas and oil price crisis, reports the Business Insider magazine.

There are about 197 indoor pools in total in the southwest. The member of parliament Gernot Gruber (SPD) said: "It is our duty to ensure that our children and young people can swim. The basis for this are open indoor and outdoor pools for swimming lessons in schools and clubs."

The approximately 600 wellness hotels in Germany also see their business model increasingly threatened. Michael Altewischer, general manager of Wellness Hotels & Resorts in Germany, told Business Insider that wellness services are "fully maintained" at the moment. Sometimes, however, some hotel operators restricted the opening hours.

Many close the sauna area earlier in the evening or the water temperature in the pool is slightly lowered. "The hoteliers now have to pass the increased energy costs on to their customers and make price adjustments accordingly," said Altewischer. Nevertheless, the depressed consumer mood has not yet had an impact on the wellness hotel industry, the houses are doing "reasonably well".

Everywhere you try to exhaust every savings potential and "optimize business processes".
