Migrant violence: Have the Berlin baths capitulated?
Around 170 security guards from private security companies are on duty in the outdoor pools on hot weekends, and the pools spend 1.5 million euros on this every year.
But what did that bring?
During the riot in Neukölln's Columbiabad three weeks ago, with eleven injured, the attackers (19, 23, 24) attacked security guards with impact weapons and tear gas.
In addition to the security guards, there has been a project “Stay cool by the pool” since 2011: This year, 26 young people are being used as mediators – also in the Columbiabad.
Eghbal Khadjezadeh (21), one of the conflict guides: "As soon as people become violent, we withdraw and call the police immediately." When the officers arrive, the mediators often help as translators. Eghbal speaks Afghan, Persian and English.
Project manager Arne Freudenberg (50): "Two years of the pandemic have meant that some visitors have to learn how to socialize again."
The conflict teams are retrained every year in cooperation with the police, and their hourly wage (6.50 euros) is financed by the bathing establishments.
