CDU Berlin wants first names of suspects in New Year's Eve riots

In the debate about how to deal with the New Year's Eve riots, Berlin's CDU leader Kai Wegner wants to know the first names of those suspected by the police.

Berlin - "There are young people who were born and grew up here and still don't feel like they belong," Wegner told Bild (Saturday edition). "The more precisely we name the group of perpetrators, the more effectively we can make preventive measures." He wanted to "win these young people over for our society," said the CDU politician.

They should develop a sense of democracy and show respect for the rule of law. Berlin's FDP boss Sebastian Czaja, on the other hand, considers the CDU advance to be nonsensical. A person's first names said nothing about the person.

"To claim otherwise is problematic," says Czaja. It is important that the perpetrators of New Year's Eve are now punished quickly and consistently, "regardless of whether their name is Hassan, Helmut or Halina".
