German Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development wants to promote gender equality in Africa

In addition to a feminist foreign policy, the federal government is now also aiming for a feminist development policy. The minister responsible, Svenja Schulze (SPD), wants to use German funds to fight for more gender equality in Africa.

Development Minister Svenja Schulze (SPD) has announced that she will set new priorities in support for African countries. In the spirit of a “feminist development policy”, her department will in future primarily support gender equality projects, she said at the presentation of the current Africa strategy on Tuesday.

A feminist development policy is the model for all German development cooperation. Schulze emphasized that the work of her ministry will aim to tackle alleged structural inequalities between the sexes in Africa. She will take care to avoid "racist structures and post-colonial continuities" and stand up for "marginalized groups such as people with disabilities, indigenous people or LGBTQI* and their rights". It's not about patronizing. That is why her department deliberately reflects on German colonial history.

Schulze: Africa is an up-and-coming continent
The world is in upheaval. Demographic, political and economic weights are shifting. Africa is a rapidly growing, emerging continent that will play an important role in the future. However, women are still worse off than men in social, economic and political life. Many women lack access to health care and contraceptives. In many African countries, girls are also forced into marriage. "These inequalities violate the human rights of girls and women and have consequences for their well-being, their educational opportunities and their creative freedom," criticized Schulze. The disadvantage also costs economic power and social progress.

Schulze also plans to increase the funds that directly or indirectly contribute to more gender equality "substantially from 64 percent to 93 percent". The Development Ministry also wants to press ahead with its plans in multi-state institutions. "With this self-commitment, a transformative effect is sought across all sectors, from adaptation to climate change to cooperation with the economy," she defended the project. In addition to gender equality, their strategy also includes the self-declaration that they will create jobs or support countries in the fight against climate change.

AfD politician Frohnmaier: Schulze reaches the final stage of woke stupidity
The development minister has received criticism for her plans from the AfD and the Union, among others. “The federal government’s new Africa strategy is based on even more feminism, even more gender and even more redistribution in the name of anti-colonial white self-flagellation. Although Ms. Schulze has reached the final stage of woke stupidity, her strategy does not solve a single problem in German development cooperation," said AfD member of parliament Markus Frohnmaier.

On the part of the Union, however, there is skepticism about the financing of the matter. The development ministry does not formulate any plausible solutions for plans such as the creation of 25 million jobs per year in Africa.
