Cardinal Marx does not want AfD supporters in church offices

According to Bishop Reinhard Marx's wishes, anyone who votes for the AfD should not take up any positions in the church. However, he doesn't want to set any fixed rules for this.

Munich - Munich Archbishop Cardinal Reinhard Marx has taken a position against AfD supporters in church offices. The party and its positions are not compatible with the values of the Catholic Church, the clergyman said on Thursday at the conclusion of the autumn general meeting of the Freising Bishops' Conference in the Bavarian capital. It is “not acceptable” for Christians to vote for a party that represents anti-constitutional positions, said Marx, according to reports from the dpa.

However, there will not be a binding rule prohibiting the party's voters from holding office in the near future. The cardinal also apparently rejects widespread incompatibility decisions. Such decisions can only be made by individual parish councils and are also legally uncertain. “I’m hesitant about putting rules in writing at the moment,” said Marx.

The AfD's high election results in the Bavarian state elections “shocked everyone”. He is “convinced that a clear line must be drawn against right-wing extremism.” The AfD entered the state parliament with 15 percent in the October elections.
