German municipalities are worried about increasing numbers of refugees

The Arnsberg government president Heinrich Böckelühr (CDU) fears that, given the increasing number of refugees, numerous gymnasiums will again have to be used to accommodate people.

Arnsberg - It is already foreseeable that the number of refugees in the summer will reach the level of 2023, said Böckelühr to the Westfalenpost (Saturday edition). “That’s why I tell the municipalities: you have to prepare,” said Böckelühr. The district government in Arnsberg is responsible for accommodating refugees nationwide. Against the background of the tense financial situation in many municipalities, the government president called for the construction of simple apartments to accommodate refugees.

That also worked after the Second World War. "Former hardware stores or containers cannot be a permanent solution. It's not just about accommodation, but also about integration," he told the Westfalenpost. Otherwise, the use of gyms can no longer be prevented.

The CDU politician accused the federal government of leaving the municipalities out in the cold. "In my view, Chancellor Olaf Scholz is letting the municipal family down; the Berlin bubble has still not recognized the scope of the problem. In the end, only limiting the influx will help," said Böckelühr.
