EU authority reports significant increase in asylum applications

Valletta - The European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) has reported a significant increase in asylum applications for the past year. With 648,000 corresponding applications, the number has increased by a third compared to 2020, the authority said.

The main destination country for migrants is Germany. 191,000 asylum applications were received there last year. France followed with 121,000 applications. Austria reported 39,000 applications received. That's a high in the country. Compared to the previous year, the number for 2021 is twice as high.

Asylum seekers mostly come from Syria and Afghanistan
Spain, on the other hand, received around a quarter fewer applications than last year. The number of registrations also fell in Greece, Sweden, Finland and Malta. The EUAA explained the decline in Spain with the falling number of applications from South America. In other countries, a strict migration policy is probably the reason for the decline.

At around 70 percent, the majority of asylum seekers were men. Almost one in three of them stated that they were minors. Almost half said they were between 18 and 34 years old. Most of the migrants came from Syria. Around 117,000 of the asylum applications were made by immigrants from this country. Afghanistan follows with 102,000 applications.
