Covid: Denmark is surprised by German measures

Copenhagen - The most important epidemiologist in Denmark, Lone Simonsen, has criticized the restrictions planned for autumn in Germany. In the neighboring country, all measures have long since been lifted and no one plans to reintroduce them.

“In Denmark we have chosen to say the threat of Covid is similar to that of seasonal influenza. And that's why we won't react differently to them," said Simonsen on T-online. The researcher from the University of Roskilde emphasized that social life is and will remain "wide open".

Although Denmark has lifted all restrictions for months, far fewer people are infected with the virus there than in Germany. The incidence in the northern neighboring country has been well below that in Germany for months. Most recently it was 263, while in Germany it was 670. The hospital stays stagnated or decreased, says Simonsen.

Germany must learn that it will not be possible to completely prevent infections in the future either. One must therefore build immunity in the population: "Yes, people get sick, and unfortunately some people get seriously ill and some die," said Simonsen. "However, as long as this is no more serious than seasonal flu, we believe there is no reason to act otherwise."

"Covid will be over soon"
She expressed incomprehension about the plans for autumn announced by Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach (SPD) and Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann (FDP): "If you look at Germany, it doesn't look as if the situation is threatening for the hospital sector .” Because there are very few beds in the intensive care units.

The corona viruses are becoming more and more harmless due to the basic immunity, said Simonsen. Two variants have now developed into colds. "Overall, it's getting better and better, and it will end soon. Maybe not this fall, but sometime in the near future we'll look at other things."
